How to give blood
From choosing a drive to the next donation, step by step. The advice is from the blood transfusion services' donor guides.
Find a drive near you
Every town where drives are held has a page of its own with the drives of the next seven days, and the permanent places, where blood is given on working days, are listed below and on their town's page. The schedule can change without notice, so check the drive again on the day you go.
Check that you can give
Anyone healthy between 18 and 65 who weighs more than 50 kg can give blood. The app's Can I donate? screen asks the questions the doctor will ask, and the answers stay on your phone. The doctor at the drive decides.
The day before and that morning
Sleep as much as you usually do and eat something light first, nothing fatty. Drink three or four glasses of water an hour or two before, and no alcohol for six hours before.
What to bring
An identity document with your photo and your personal identification number, such as your identity card, and the questionnaire printed if you filled it in. Foreign nationals living in Serbia for more than six months also show their residence document.
At the drive
You sign in with your document and fill in the questionnaire, a drop of blood from your finger shows your haemoglobin, and a doctor examines you and asks about your health. Giving the blood itself takes five to ten minutes, and after it you rest and eat something. The whole visit takes about half an hour.
After giving blood
Keep the bandage on for two hours and drink three or four glasses more than usual that day. Nothing heavy for at least four hours, no cigarette for two hours and no alcohol for eight, and do not set off on a long drive that day or do anything risky, such as working at a height.
Next time
Men can give again after 12 weeks and women after 16, the time the body takes to replace the iron. Write the donation down in the app and it tells you from which day you can give again.
